Split Bill Calculator
Divide a bill, optional tip and added charge while reconciling currency rounding.
Your inputs
Starting values are examples. Edit them to explore your own scenario.
Use one currency for all amounts. Changing this label does not convert numbers or apply any country’s tax rules. Amounts may include up to two decimal places.
Before the optional percentages below.
Whole people, with an equal split.
Applied to the subtotal only.
A charge you supply, applied to the subtotal. Use 0 if already included.
Rounded bill including extras: USD 100.00
Your current scenario
Recalculated from the inputs above. Rounded display amounts may not reconcile exactly except where a rounding split is explicitly shown.
- Rounded bill including extras
- USD 100.00
- Standard payment per person
- USD 33.33
- Payment for a remainder recipient
- USD 33.34
- People assigned one rounding unit
- 1
- 2 people pay the standard amount; 1 person pays one smallest currency unit more. The individual shares add up to the rounded total.
How this calculation works
Total = subtotal × (1 + tip ÷ 100 + added charge ÷ 100). Round the total to minor currency units; divide the units equally and distribute the remainder one unit at a time.
Assumptions and limits
- No default local tax or tip rate. Tip and added charge both use the subtotal, without compounding.
- USD/EUR/GBP use cents; KRW/JPY use whole units. This does not apply special local cash-rounding rules.
Worked example
Example: USD 100 split three ways with no extras is USD 33.34 for one person and USD 33.33 for two. The shares add back to USD 100.00.
Questions about this tool
Why are there two payment amounts?
The rounded bill may not divide evenly. Assigning the one-unit remainder to a few people makes the individual payments reconcile exactly with the total.
Does changing the currency convert my amounts?
No. Currency selects the unit and rounding used to display the numbers you enter. Enter every amount in that same currency. No exchange rate, local tax rule or benefit entitlement is inferred.
